An Apple a Day Reduces the Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease has been one of the leading causes of deaths in many western countries. This is due to the fact that most foods consumed are processed and contain preservatives that are harmful to the body. It could easily be prevented if we start to adopt a healthy lifestyle. A natural diet consisting of fruits and vegetables must be encouraged in order to combat diseases.

The elders would always say, “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. This popular folklore which has been passed on to different generations might actually be true.  Ohio University conducted the study on middle-aged healthy adults. For four weeks, they consumed one apple a day. The research has proven that eating at least one apple each day can decrease the risk of heart disease by 40%. It lowered the blood levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein or what is commonly called bad cholesterol. In just four weeks, the researchers found out a remarkable effect of LDL being oxidized.

Apples have always been a natural source of antioxidants, flavonoids, and dietary fiber which may help in reducing the risk of developing heart disease. It contains soluble fibers called pectin, which has been proven to effectively lower the cholesterol levels. A strong antioxidant activity can also be found in apples lowering the cholesterol levels and decrease lipid oxidation. It contains a mixture of very strong antioxidants such as quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid. Aside from preventing heart disease, apples also contain a rich amount of nutrients that could fight against stroke and cancer.

The choices we make in our diet have a significant impact on our health. You might want to consider adding an apple to your daily routine. This little change in your lifestyle might play a big role in a having a healthy cardiovascular system.
